I just found this article at the Pratt Tribune. http://www.pratttribune.com/highlight/x2096609199/Wasinger-gets-back-to-basics Here is a quote from the article by Wasinger.
It seems Congress has lost touch with what is really going on in rural America, Wasinger said. It’s amusing. We’d all be eating tofu and driving solar powered cars, Wasinger said. It’s ludicrous how disconnected they are in Washington. We’ve got to get back to basics.
I do agree that Washington has lost touch with the average American – but I think its misspoken to talk about tofu in a negative light. Because tofu IS made with soymilk (from soybeans). In fact, here is a link to tofu recipes from the Kansas Soybean Commission. http://www.soyfoods.com/TofuRecipes2002.html Consider the increase they are talking about in this article: http://www.kansas.com/2010/03/19/1232491/soybean-corn-plantings-to-surge.html There are even more fields of soybeans being grown. According to this article http://www.hutchnews.com/Todaystop/corn2010-01-12T23-19-57
Kansas farmers also harvested a record 160.6 million bushels of soybeans in 2009.
If I were a grower of soybeans…I would want Americans to eat tofu and other soybean products. And I certainly would not want a politician who wanted to represent rural Kansas, to cast soybean products in a negative light. But then maybe I am being too sensitive about political etiquette.
